Internist and pediatrician Dr. Lindsay Ford makes medicine a family affair.

LindsayFordMDWhile completing her undergraduate degree in civil engineering at Mississippi State University, Dr. Lindsay Ford worked at the university’s veterinary school — where she discovered her interest in medicine. “I was actually working in the pharmacy, and I just enjoyed being around the medical side of things,” she remembers.

Soon, Dr. Ford was able to pinpoint just what it was that intrigued her. “Ultimately, it was the patient contact that I liked,” she says. Because her father was an ophthalmologist, she was also familiar with the ins and outs of medicine. She decided to enroll in medical school at the University of Mississippi in Jackson.

After earning her medical degree, Dr. Ford came to New Orleans, completing her residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at Tulane Medical School in 2013. “I took a little time off and got married, and then started working at East Jeff in February,” she says.

Recently, she moved office locations to the hospital’s new Lakeview building. “We actually have an office in Orleans Parish now, which is kind of a big deal!” she says.

Alongside family practitioner Dr. Jonathan Cone, Dr. Ford works with patients of all ages — performing checkups and “routine health maintenance,” which includes everything from cold and flu to high cholesterol and diabetes. Thorough attention to every patient is a key aspect of her approach. “I always try to make sure that I encompass all aspects of the patient’s health,” she says. “The best feedback I get is, typically, ‘I’m going to send my friend to you, because we’ve enjoyed you so much.’”

Though many of her current internal medicine patients are adults, the number of kids Dr. Ford sees is growing — and she admits she’s excited about that. “They’re always just happy little smiling faces once they get better,” she says of her younger patients. “It’s always a bright light at the end of the day.”

Dr. Ford also enjoys working with teenagers, helping to guide them into taking charge of their health. “I like seeing the kids grow up, and start making their detachments from their parents, and start making their own health decisions,” she says.

When she leaves the office, Dr. Ford keeps it simple. “My husband and I like to go out to dinner and try different, new places; go look at antiques; and play with our dog,” she says. café b on Metairie Road is one of the couple’s standbys, while Uchi Sushi & Hibachi on Causeway Boulevard is a recent discovery (and where Dr. Ford foresees returning).
