Canal Street: Home For the Holidays

DowntownLivingNov2013In an effort to support Canal Street retail shops during the holiday season and to encourage family activity along the corridor, the Downtown Development District created Canal Street: Home for the Holidays celebration. Now in its seventh year, this grand series of events presented by The Roosevelt New Orleans and the DDD will draw thousands of visitors and locals for an array of holiday merriment and magic. Bring your friends and family Downtown to Canal Street and enjoy all the season has to offer!

Nov. 25
See Canal Street illuminated by more than a million twinkling lights as the DDD and the Crown Plaza New Orleans French Quarter hotel flip the switch during the Canal Street Lighting Ceremony at 5:30 pm. Saunter down Canal Street, and stop in at the Crown Plaza’s St. Charles Ballroom to decorate your own cookie and sip hot apple cider or rich cocoa. You can sit on Santa’s lap and whisper your wishes into his ear, and if you bring an unwrapped, new toy as a donation for local charities, you’ll also get a free picture with Old Saint Nick!

Dec. 5 & Dec. 12
Bring your friends and family to enjoy the outdoor Holiday Movies on the Mississippi two weekends in a row at the Riverwalk’s Spanish Plaza! The Outlet Collection at Riverwalk and the DDD are pleased to present How the Grinch Stole Christmas on Dec. 5 and Elf on Dec. 12, both showing at 6:30 pm. Don’t forget the popcorn!

Dec. 6
No holiday in New Orleans would be complete without an official parade! Together, The Roosevelt New Orleans and the DDD will once again bring joy to Canal Street with the Krewe of Jingle Parade, featuring festive floats, stilt-walkers, traditional Christmas characters, marching bands and more. The parade will begin at 1 pm, starting at Lee Circle and rolling through the Warehouse District and the CBD.

Dec. 13
Attention kids of all ages! It’s time to register and join in on the fun at the Reindeer Run & Romp, kicking off at the Riverwalk’s Spanish Plaza. Presented by Entergy and the DDD, this rollicking race will start at the sound of Santa’s jingling bells. Participants will receive antlers, a race t-shirt and a bag of holiday goodies. Finish the sprint; then romp around the Riverwalk’s Spanish Plaza, enjoying music, games, crafts, pictures with Santa and other healthy activities, like yoga for kids and adults.
