It’s Cooler Up North

Fall is here in full force with the most fantastic fashions.

Sitting-768x501September is by far one of ALG Style’s favorite months: The boutiques are filled with incredible clothing; New York Fashion Week is taking place; and all the fashion glossies are the size of War and Peace. After careful editing, scrutiny and laughs, the ladies of ALG Style have chosen the must-have items and trends to follow for fall 2016. For a little respite from the heat, we suggest you take a little trip up north — the Northshore that is. It’s a few degrees cooler across the Causeway Bridge, so we suggest you go chill out and do some retail therapy in Mandeville and Covington.

Things We Covet

New to the downtown Covington shopping scene, COVET opened in April on perhaps the cutest block on the Northshore and above Coffee Rani. The owner, Jenny Carr, is by no means new to the fashion and boutique world. Carr has quite the resume when it comes to all things style. Prior to opening COVET, she was the original Owner of SNAP Boutique on Metairie Road. She also has a blog called The Coveted Life, which focuses on shopping, interiors and all things lovely, and she also was a manager for Clover Boutique on Magazine Street. She was born with a fashion editor’s eye and an innate sense of style.

Carr says that it is essential for her clients to build their wardrobe with “not-so-basic basics.” These are pieces that continue to be essential staples in one’s closet yet are timeless and modern at the same time. “In my three-year break from SNAP to COVET, I listened to what women wanted,” Carr says. “At COVET, I pay careful attention to fabrics and details — and keep inventory practical yet with an elevated sense of style.”

ALG Style narrowed down five preferred trends for fall 2016, and Jenny Carr has curated the idyllic inventory to find all your main wardrobe fillers to stay current and on-trend without being trendy.

1. Meow
Every season some mode of animal print becomes prevalent. And 2016 is the year of the leopard. You can roar and try it as a pencil skirt, or, if you prefer to purr, a clutch or a pointy toe pump will keep you current. “I am excited about Equipment Collection in collaboration with Kate Moss — they have a leopard bomber jacket,” Carr says. Take caution though! Only one item of animal print at a time, otherwise ALG will have to tranquilize your hind quarter like a Siegfried & Roy Vegas show cat.

2. In the Navy
We adore all the crispness and classic cuts of military-inspired clothing. A Navy peacoat is going to be a must-have item. Pick up the real deal at your local Army Surplus store for a fraction of the designer cost. Or look for the modern twist of this timeless coat in a cropped and boxy silhouette.

3. Varsity Blues
Shades of blue took over the fall/winter runway collections. There is a blue to complement every skin tone. According to Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, in a Women’s Wear Daily article, she singled out “modern day stresses” such as the pending election, and financial and job insecurity, for the influx of blue hues in fashion this year. Eiseman explained, “With all the angst in the ether and in the world around us, there is a need for more calming colors.”

4. Transparency
Illusion fabric, sheer lace panels, and strategic cutouts on dresses and tops add a touch of sass and sexiness. A little skin goes a long way. To pull this look off successfully, make certain you are accentuating your best assets and you are wearing proper under pinnings. “Off-the-shoulder blouses are going forward from summer to fall,” Carr says. It is an easy way to show off skin at any age.

5. Romancing the Accessory
Accessories are an effortless way to stay fresh every season. This year, accessories are romantic and glamourous. Capelets, gloves, furs and statement-making chokers are stunning and completely transform an outfit into a posh, polished and show-stopping ensemble. “COVET is thrilled to have furs this season,” Carr says. “We have dusters and oversized cardigan-inspired furs arriving in beautiful blush, gray, navy and black.”

Brr! It’s chilly up north! Luckily COVET has all the things we are craving to keep us cozy and fashion-forward this fall. Happy shopping!
