As we age, our skin becomes thinner; it loses fat; and it no longer looks as plump and smooth as it did in our youth.
Hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in our skin that provides fullness and elasticity, diminishes as we age, which causes skin to lose volume and become more susceptible to wrinkles. Dermal fillers, such as Restylane and Juvéderm, are clear, sterile gel formulations of hyaluronic acid that have been specifically formulated to act like the hyaluronic acid that our bodies produces naturally. When injected into the skin, dermal fillers can help to instantly and visibly reduce moderate to severe facial wrinkles, or add fullness to the lips.
FDA-approved fillers like Restylane and Juvéderm can add volume and fullness to the skin to plump facial wrinkles and folds. Most often, dermal fillers are used to treat laugh lines; the area just below the nose and above the upper lip; the corners of the mouth; and marionette lines, which extend downward from the corners of the mouth to the jawline. Depending on the treatment area and injection technique, the results from Restylane and Juvéderm can last from four to six months. To make patients more comfortable, many offices will apply a topical anesthetic cream to the skin about a half hour before the treatment, which not only helps to numb the injection site, but also decreases the chances of bruising.
Dermal fillers are usually priced per syringe, which range from $450 to $600. A treatment to fill out the lines from the nose to the mouth, for example, may take up to two syringes. Ask your dermatologist if dermal fillers are appropriate for you!
