Celebrate the Holidays in the Downtown Development DistrictDowntownLivingNov2013Canal Street: Home for the Holidays
The Downtown Development District created this festive celebration in 2008 to support Canal Street retailers during the holiday season and to encourage family activity along the grand corridor. Now in its sixth year, Canal Street: Home for the Holidays, presented by the DDD and The Roosevelt New Orleans, will bring more than 25,000 locals and visitors Downtown for holiday magic and merriment!

Canal Street Lighting Ceremony – Tuesday, November 26
Stroll along Canal Street and watch as the Downtown Development District and the Crown Plaza New Orleans French Quarter “flip the switch,” turning on more than 1 million twinkling lights. Stop by the Crown Plaza’s St. Charles Ballroom just off the lobby between 5:00 and 7:00 pm to decorate your own holiday cookie while enjoying complimentary hot cocoa and apple cider. Santa will be there to hear your wish list for the holidays. Bring an unwrapped new toy for local charities and receive a free picture with Santa!

Holiday Movies on the Mississippi – Friday, December 6 & Friday, December 13
The Downtown Development District and the Riverwalk Marketplace present two weekends of special outdoor movie showings starting at 6:30 pm at the Riverwalk’s Spanish Plaza.

Krewe of Jingle Parade – Saturday, December 7
New Orleans’ official holiday parade, the Krewe of Jingle, will once again delight locals and visitors alike with authentic parade floats, marching bands, stilt walkers, Christmas characters and many more magical surprises! At 1 pm, the parade will roll from Howard Avenue and Carondolet, arc around Lee Circle to St. Charles Avenue, turn right when it hits Canal Street, make a U-turn at North Peters and follow Canal to Baronne Street, which it will follow all the way back to Howard Avenue where it ends. Reindeer Run and Romp – Saturday, December 14
Calling all kids! The Downtown Development District and Entergy present the annual holiday fun run for kids on Canal Street. Rudolph, Santa and friends will jingle their bells to signal the start of the race. Participants will receive antlers, a race T-shirt and a bag of holiday goodies. After the race, “romp” around the Riverwalk’s Spanish Plaza and enjoy healthy activities like yoga for kids and parents, pictures with Santa, music, games, crafts and more. Registration begins at 8 am; the race begins at 9 am.
