Joy in the Job

The doctors at Metairie Sinus & Snoring Center, Michael Hickham, M.D. and Paul Spring, M.D., think of their staff and patients like family. And their family just grew to include a very significant new member.

Dan Jacob, M.D. — a prominent, New Orleans-area ear, nose, throat, face and neck surgeon, and facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon — brings his experience and skill set to the Metairie Sinus team.

Dr. Jacob has lived in New Orleans for more than 40 years. He grew up in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and moved to New Orleans to attend Tulane University as an undergraduate. After graduating from Tulane University School of Medicine, he served five years in the U.S. Navy and returned to complete his residency at LSU. He opened a private practice in facial plastic surgery and otolaryngology in Metairie in 1985.

Dr. Jacob is board certified to perform both facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, and otolaryngology (ear, nose, and throat)/head and neck surgery. His focus with Metairie Sinus will be treatment of ear, nose and throat disorders. He will perform a host of procedures like balloon sinuplasty; palate, uvula, nose and throat structure adjustments for snoring and sleep apnea; and medical and surgical options to combat persistent inflammation and reduce medication reliance in chronic sinusitis.

Committed to the highest level of patient care, Dr. Jacob believes every patient deserves consideration and compassion. Both Drs. Hickham and Spring feel Dr. Jacob is a great match for their team as he — like them — is committed to listening to patients, carefully assessing their needs and helping set realistic goals for attaining long-term success.

“We always say, ‘Let us show you the Metairie Sinus & Snoring Center difference … in our office and in your quality of life,’” Dr. Spring says. “Dr. Jacob is completely onboard with that philosophy and a great addition to the team.”

Dr. Jacob for his part is eager to be a part of the growing practice. “The set-up is ideal,” he says. “All in one office, the Metairie Sinus patients have access to board-certified ENTs and surgeons, airway exams, sleep studies, balloon sinuplasty, respiratory therapy, audiology exams, device consultation and medical management — and often, all at one appointment. I am looking forward to focusing on my background in problem-solving otolaryngology issues. It’s such a joy to be able to make another person feel better.”

Beyond the Office
Dr. Jacob has had a fulfilling career in medicine, working with both Tulane and LSU medical schools to train future surgeons as well as planning and partaking in medical missions in his spare time.

In 2002, Dr. Jacob co-founded the New Orleans Medical Mission Services Foundation, and, to date, he has helped organize 32 medical missions to Latin America — during which 37,562 eyeglasses have been dispensed and 1,756 surgeries have been performed. Locally, NOMMS has donated goods and supplies to the Louisiana National Guard and the City of New Orleans (post Hurricane Katrina), the Women’s New Life Center, Servants of Mary, Second Harvest Food Bank, Catholic Charities and the Daughters of Charity.

“In providing care for these extremely impoverished people, I have learned the true meaning of ‘It is better to give than receive,’” Dr. Jacob says. nomms.org
